"Five-axis Motion System" is the third part of a series of articles entitled "Water Jet Cutting in the Era of Intelligent Manufacturing" written by Dr. Zeng Jiyue of Shimai Technology. It was published on "Jet News", the journal of WJTA (American Association for Water Jet Technology) in June 2020.
In this paper, Dr. Zeng listed a variety of five-axis linkage head swinging mechanisms common in the water cutting industry, and introduced the principles and characteristics of five kinds of head swinging mechanisms from shallow to complex. At the same time, the advantages and disadvantages of five kinds of swinging mechanism are compared from the aspects of working efficiency, tilting Angle, precision, manufacturing difficulty and cost. If you want A low-cost head swinging mechanism, you can consider "A-B head swinging mechanism". If you need to cut a large bevel, you should consider the "AI-C head swing mechanism"; If you need accuracy and motion efficiency, avoid both and consider the other three. If A balance between high inclination Angle and precision is needed, "A-BI parallelogram tilting mechanism" should be considered. If a balance between simplicity and precision is required, consider the "AI-BI head swing mechanism".
Ultimately, Dr Tsang points out, the performance of five-axis machines depends largely on the control systems that give them life. Using advanced algorithms, five-axis combined water jet cutting machine can accurately remove the taper, eliminate or reduce the non-production time. Otherwise, its use may be limited to imprecise groove cutting. Good design and proper processing and assembly can make the head mechanism with complicated mechanical structure have the characteristics of compact, high precision, convenient maintenance and relatively low cost. Poor design and improper processing and assembly can make the simple swinging mechanism become inaccurate, unreliable and unusable.
